January 29, 2026 - Trans Issues in Archival Description
This one hour Zoom workshop will take place on Thursday, January 29, 2026 from 12 p.m. - 1 p.m.
At this session, attendees will learn about issues that commonly arise in describing archival resources created by and about trans and gender diverse people and communities and describe best practices for addressing these issues.
The workshop will cover privacy concerns related to gender identity and balancing those with representation of those identities in the archive, shifting historical ideas about gender and why that matters in archival description, and best practices for collaborating with trans and gender diverse people and communities.

About the Instructor: Beck Schaefer is an experienced cataloguer and cataloguing instructor in Toronto. He holds an MA in History (York) and an MI in Archives & Records Management (University of Toronto). Beck was part of the Trans Metadata Collective (TMDC) which published "Metadata Best Practices for Trans and Gender Diverse Resources" in 2022 and he continues to be active in trans inclusion projects within the North American library cataloguing community.
Format: one hour workshop presentation followed by a short question and answer period.
Registration: A minimum of 10 participants and a maximum of 90 participants. Institutional members can register three participants at the members rate.
