The AAO’s Professional Development Committee presents

A Hands-On Introduction to Digital Preservation

This workshop will demonstrate a low cost digital preservation workflow for novices. Participants will be introduced to the principles underlying digital preservation, be given a demonstration of some open source tools that can be used in a preservation workflow, and be given the opportunity to try out these tools. There will also be an introduction to some web archiving tools.

Participants will learn about the OAIS reference model and the NDSA levels of preservation. They will also be given the opportunity to learn and practice some open source software such as

  • Teracopy to copy files and create checksums
  • Data Accessioner to copy digital content between media, create and validate checksums and add metadata
  • Metadata Transformer to convert XML metadata files
  • Bagger to create packages containing digital content along with a manifest file listing the contents and checksums which can be used to verify the package and its contents
  • Conifer to capture websites for long term preservation

When: Wednesday May 12th 9:00am to 12:00pm (ET). Click here for a time zone converter, (please be advised that participants arriving late may find it difficult to follow along)
Where: Online. Instructions will be sent after registration.
Cost: $80 (AAO members); $50 (AAO student members); $120 (non-members)

Additional Information: In order to fully participate in this workshop, participants should be able to download and install five open source software tools (participants can follow along without installing the tools, but they may not get the full value of the workshop). Instructions for downloading the tools can be found online, and we suggest participants try to download and install these tools before registering, as we are unable to provide IT support for installing these programs.

Participants should also be comfortable with navigating a directory (e.g. using Windows Explorer or Finder) to find files and folders in a computer system.
