The Original Order of Things:

An AAO Monthly Newsletter

July 2022, Volume 2, Issue 7

Editor's Welcome

In the midst of what we hope is a relaxing summer for all of our readers, we have a few small news items to pass along this month. Before we begin, be sure to add the most recent issue of Off the Record to your summer reading list and check out the AAO’s volunteer opportunities as you start planning for the fall!

AAO News

a. AAO’s Summer 2022 Issue of Off The Record

The Summer issue of Off The Record is now available on the AAO’s website. This issue features a fascinating column on a mysterious image found in the archives, a profile of Tamara Rayan, a moving tribute to Julia Hendry, and an inspirational overview of this years’ award winners and their achievements. Check out the Summer issue here.

b.  Join the AAO’s Communications and Advocacy Committee

The Communications and Advocacy Committee (CAC) is looking for new members! In addition to producing the monthly newsletter, the CAC advises the Board on matters relating to communication with the membership, the operation of a program of public awareness and outreach, as well as providing leadership in the event that emergency advocacy is required on behalf of the membership. To read past responses written by the CAC, visit Archives Association of Ontario - Advocacy (aao-archivists.ca)

Members interested in volunteering can email CAC Chair Tys Klumpenhouwer (klumpenhouwer.t@gmail.com) or Board Liaison Leslie Thomas (director2@aao-archivists.ca) with expressions of interest.

c. The AAO’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee

The AAO Board of Directors is looking for AAO individual members to join the newly established Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee for a two-year term (2022-2024).

Building on the efforts of the DEI Working Group, this committee will advise the AAO Board of Directors, standing committees and membership on issues relating to DEI within the AAO itself and the archival profession at large.

Questions and expressions of interest can be sent to the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee chair Krista McCracken (past.president@aao-archivists.ca).

d. Join an AAO Committee

Do you want to get involved with the AAO? Are you a new professional looking to meet fellow archivists and contribute to the field? If so, you’re in luck! The AAO is looking for volunteers for the following committees:

  • Advancement Committee
  • Communications and Advocacy Committee (CAC)
  • Digital Access and Preservation Committee (DAPC)
  • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)
  • Committee Student and New Professionals Outreach Committee

Detailed committee descriptions and a listing of current membership can be found on the AAO website.

If you are interested in volunteering or wish to learn more about these opportunities, please reach out to Director Without Portfolio Leslie Thomas at director2@aao-archivists.ca.

d. Professional Development Committee (PDC) - New workshop available

The AAO’s Professional Development Committee presents “Electronic Recordkeeping : Building a Modern Software-Ready Retention Schedule Suitable for Electronic Recordkeeping.”

This one-day workshop provides an overview of modern electronic recordkeeping concepts and techniques, and a high-level introduction to EDRMS (Electronic Records/Document Management Systems). You will learn new recordkeeping terminology and concepts, and “unlearn” many sacred traditional records management notions. With this course you will learn the new language of electronic records, the seven core concepts of electronic recordkeeping, and the critical difference between case and administrative records. You will also learn how to automate recordkeeping processes to eliminate the need for end user participation and how your retention schedule will need to change as a result.

When: September 15, 2022, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm EST.

Where: Online. Instructions will be sent upon registration.

Cost: $150 (AAO members); $100 (AAO student members); $240 (non-members)
