2019 Symposium

Institutional Issues Forum 24 October 2019 – Introduction to theme of the Forum

Stay right where you are; we are on our way -- This is not an emergency. It is an opportunity.

Increasingly, archivists are being challenged to think outside the box. This, more often than not, means that archivists need to reach out to meet communities wherever they are rather than assume that communities will come to them. Recent conference presentations have demonstrated that there is a desire by diverse communities to tell their own stories, usually online via personal websites, Wikipedia or on social media. In doing so, they are creating histories, but who will ensure their long term preservation and what roll is there for archives in telling those tales? If we can no longer assume that researchers will come to our reading rooms, then where is the best place for us to meet our researchers?
