Pre-Conference Workshops

Workshop 1: Tools for Electronic Records 

9:00 am to 12:00 pm OR 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

This workshop will run in the morning AND afternoon. Please read carefully and choose one time slot ONLY when registering. 

Continuing from the foundations of Introduction to Electronic Records, this hands-on workshop will assess and examine some of the tools (software and hardware) used in preparing, acquiring, processing and preserving electronic records. Learning outcomes include:

• examine the needs and abilities of their respective institutions to select certain preservation strategies

• identify how specific software can be used in their work with electronic records

• discuss the benefits and challenges of both open-source and proprietary solutions

• understand how to test and implement software for use in the archives

• practice working with commonly used electronic records acquisition and preservation tools

The workshop will be instructed by archivist Jeremy Heil.

*Please bring a laptop along for workshop exercises.


Workshop 2: More than Documents—Getting it Right

9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Learn how to organize a disparate collection, especially if the items are constructed of assorted materials with different care and storage requirements. This hands-on workshop will guide participants on how to determine the best way to care for non-archival materials. Topics covered include:

• Determine best storage materials

• Identify appropriate care and handling

• Learn how to use museum cataloguing tools

The workshop will be instructed by archivist Mary Gladwin. *Registration is limited to 15 participants.


Workshop 3: Wikipedia for Archivists 

1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

This workshop will introduce archivists to the principles and practicalities of editing Wikipedia and adding links to online archival resources to the site. It covers both theoretical and practical elements and will equip attendees with the confidence to make the most of Wikipedia as a tool for sharing archival materials. Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

• Learning how to create a Wikipedia account

• Basics of editing Wikipedia articles

• Creating links in Wikipedia

• Wikipedia and Archives

The workshop will be instructed by archivists Danielle Robichaud and Amanda Hill.
