E-mail Print PDF

The AAO 2012 Programme Committee is thrilled to announce that Dr. John Warkentin, OC, FRSC, Professor Emeritus, York University, will give the keynote address at the conference.

John Warkentin is one of Canada's pre-eminent historical geographers, and Professor Emeritus at York University. He is the author of a number of works on the historical geography of Canada including The Western Interior of Canada and So Vast and Various: Interpreting Canada's Regions in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries. He was the co-ordinating editor of the Historical Atlas of Canada and has been an Officer of the Order of Canada since 2000.

Most recently, Dr. Warkentin has been interested in issues of memory and commemoration. Dr. Warkentin will draw on the research from his volume Creating Memory: A Guide to Outdoor Sculpture in Toronto (published by Becker Associates) to discuss the role of public art in war commemoration.

Dr. Warkentin is a very engaging speaker and we look forward to his opening address.
