Formed in 1994 as a special interest section of the AAO, the Municipal Archives Interest Group (MAIG) represents municipal archivists, institutions and individuals interested in the preservation and use of municipal and other community based records in Ontario. To become a member, one must first be a member of the AAO.

MAIG's mission is as follows:

  • Support and promotion of existing AAO services and resources among Ontario's municipalities, including the Archives Advisor Programme, AAO workshops and related publications;
  • Advocacy for the creation and maintenance of municipal archives in the province;
  • Professional mentoring in the development of new and emerging municipal archives in Ontario;
  • Input and expertise regarding provincial legislation pertaining to records and archives, including the Municipal Act, the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and the Assessment Act;
  • Regular forums and symposia to promote professional development and public awareness, including an annual open house, exhibits, regular meetings and participation in the AAO's annual conference;
  • Promotion of partnerships with municipal organizations, including the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, as well as related professional and heritage organizations;
  • Liaison with the Archives of Ontario regarding Ontario's archival system and the status of municipal records in the province.
