    Iona McCraithIona McCraith holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree (1979) from York University, where she majored in anthropology and art history. She has been a practising conservator specializing in archival materials since 1982, when she graduated from Algonquin College with an Applied Arts Diploma in museum conservation. Upon leaving Algonquin College she completed a one year internship at the Canadian Conservation Institute to further hone her skills and experience.

    Prior to joining the AAO as Preservation Consultant in 1999 she was senior conservator at the City of Toronto Archives (1983 – 1991) and then Head Conservator for the Archives of Ontario (1991-1999). In 2013 Iona was appointed Archives Advisor. In addition to her work as an advisor for AAO, Iona maintains a private practise as an archival consultant and paper conservator to heritage institutions, corporations and private collectors.

    Iona also has many years of experience in developing and teaching courses and presenting seminars on preservation-related subjects, particularly as they pertain to archives. She was a part time faculty member at George Brown College from 1990-1993, teaching an introduction to preservation course in the Archives Management Certificate Program. Later she joined Fleming College as a part time faculty member from 1999-2005 to teach courses in archival preservation and paper conservation theory and practice. For the AAO’s education program she has developed several workshops including: Preservation Management, Health & Safety in Archives, Emergency Planning, Basic Conservation Techniques, Preventive Conservation, and Emergency Salvage and Response.

    Iona holds memberships in professional organizations such as the Canadian Association for Conservation, American Institute for Conservation, Association of Canadian Archivists, and the Ontario Museum Association. She is also active in the archival community at the national level; as a member of the Archives Advisors Group and as Chair of the Preservation Committee of the Canadian Council of Archives.

    Just released the DPTK is designed to support digitization projects and digital scholarship projects that are initiated and managed in archives and special collections repositories, large and small. It includes detailed templates, workflows, and examples for all stages of digital projects, including:


    ·         Project planning (charters, selection, prioritization, cost estimate)

    ·         Risk assessment (guidelines and workflow, templates for risk reports and fair use statements)

    ·         Implementation planning (metadata guidelines and specifications, scanning specifications and procedures, metadata worksheet)  

    ·         Web development planning (example of RFP, and templates for vendor decisions, design/aesthetic/functionality decisions, user profile templates)

    ·        Quality control workflow and guidelines for metadata and scanning

    ·        Communication/documentation tool for technical specifications

    ·        Assessment and evaluation tools and templates

    The Archives of Ontario is celebrating Archives Awareness Week April 7 - 11 and the AAO is participating on Thursday April 9th.  Come meet Amanda Hill, Archeion Coordinator and Iona McCraith, Archives Advisor.  We will be presenting a session from 3 - 4 pm about the various services of the AAO and the rest of the day you can meet us  and ask questions at our information table in the lobby.  Full details of all events at the Archives of Ontario  at  Note: some Note: some events require pre-registration.

    Temporarily the former preservation and AERN (archives emergency response network) related articles in the Resources section of the AAO website have been removed for revision and updating by the Preservation Committee.  New and improved editions will start to appear again in the Spring.   So watch this space or check the news blog of Preservation Committee for updates on the progress of this project!
